This is usually a saved startup page or a restored previous session—not malware.
- Open your browser's startup settings.
- Remove about:blank from the saved page list.

It is a URL, but not a website.
The about: URI scheme identifies browser-related resources. The keyword blank asks for the empty document defined for interoperability. No domain is looked up and no remote page needs to be downloaded.
In developer contexts, the story is more nuanced: a popup or frame can begin at about:blank, inherit an origin, and receive content from its creator. That is why “blank” describes the initial document—not a universal promise that no code can ever run in that context.

No. The page itself is harmless. Investigate only when it comes with separate warning signs such as settings that change without permission, repeated redirects, unknown extensions, or fake security alerts.
Why does about:blank keep opening?
Common causes include a saved startup page, session restore, a site opening a temporary popup, a blocked navigation, or an extension. The moment it appears—on startup, after a click, or at random—is the fastest diagnostic clue.
Can I delete about:blank from my browser?
You cannot remove the browser's built-in blank document. You can remove it from startup or homepage settings, close a restored tab, or fix the site or extension that keeps opening it.
Does about:blank use the internet or track me?
Loading the blank document itself does not request a webpage from a server and contains no tracker. The browser, extensions, sync, and other background services may still use the network independently.
Why does a blank tab appear briefly, then load a page?
A new tab or popup can begin as an initial about:blank document before its destination finishes navigating. A brief flash can be normal during sign-in, payment, file, and popup flows.
Is about:blank the same as a New Tab page?
Not necessarily. A New Tab page can contain search, shortcuts, news, or browser branding. about:blank is intentionally empty. Homepage, startup page, and New Tab settings are separate in many browsers.
