About Blank is an independent browser-help project built to answer a deceptively simple question accurately: what is about:blank, and what should you do when it appears?
Why this site exists
Many pages repeat the same broad claims: that about:blank is a security feature, that #blocked always means a dangerous site, or that every blank tab needs a malware cleaner. Those shortcuts are easy to publish and often wrong.
We separate different user intents, start with the observable symptom, and prefer a precise answer over a dramatic one. The blank document itself is neutral. Startup settings, popup rules, browser security boundaries, extensions, and broken websites require different explanations.
Primary sources first
Standards, browser source documentation, and official support pages take priority over recycled summaries.
Answer before background
Every guide begins with the direct answer and then gives context only where it changes the next step.
No fear-based selling
We do not label a harmless blank page as malware to push a cleaner, VPN, or remote-support service.
Browser-specific claims
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari do not share every command or error page. We say when guidance is product-specific.
How a guide is produced
- Define the exact question. “What is it?”, “Why is it blocked?”, “Is it malware?”, and “How do I stop it?” are separate intents.
- Check the technical definition. We consult standards such as RFC 6694 and the WHATWG HTML Standard, plus browser-engine documentation where behavior is implementation-specific.
- Verify the interface path. Browser-setting instructions are checked against current Chrome, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Apple support documentation.
- Remove unsafe shortcuts. We do not recommend globally disabling security controls, installing unknown “removers,” or bypassing workplace policies.
- Date the review. A review date means the page's claims and cited instructions were actually checked on that date.
Authorship and expertise
Current pages are published under the About Blank Editorial Team byline. It describes the site's editorial responsibility; it is not a fabricated individual or credential. We do not claim affiliation with Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Apple, Chromium, or any security vendor.
The site explains public browser behavior and safe consumer troubleshooting. It does not provide incident-response services or replace an organization's IT and security team. Managed-device questions should be escalated to the administrator who controls the policy.
Use of editorial tools
Drafting, research, and quality-control tools may assist the editorial process. Tools are not treated as authors or sources. Factual claims must be supported by the visible page content and, for consequential browser or security guidance, the cited primary documentation.
Updates and corrections
Browser interfaces change. We review core guides after meaningful browser changes and update the visible date only when the relevant instructions have been rechecked. If a cited help page changes, the browser maker's current instructions take precedence.
A correction should state what was wrong, what changed, and when it was fixed. The next development step is to add a public corrections log and a direct contact channel; until then, deployment owners should route feedback through the contact method attached to the domain or hosting account.
Commercial policy
This version contains no affiliate recommendations, paid rankings, sponsored articles, or remote-support lead forms. If monetization is added, commercial relationships should be disclosed before the first relevant link, affiliate links should be marked appropriately, and no product should be presented as a cure for about:blank itself.
